Nike Strikes a Deal with Pro Golfer Jason Day
Earlier this month, Nike announced that they’ve signed top-ranking golfer, Jason Day, to a multi-year contract. The agreement covers Nike footwear, apparel, headwear, and gloves. Day, who turned pro in 2006, has won ten PGA Tour titles (including the 2015 PGA Championship) and 57 top-ten finishes in his career.
This comes mere months after Nike, along with several of their competitors, announced that they would be bowing out of the golf equipment business. As interest in golf continues its decline, the sportswear giant has opted to take a step back and stick to what it does best – clothes and accessories.
That’s not to say that Nike has completely given up. In fact, the sportswear giant has managed to stay at the forefront of golf-loving consumers’ minds through various endorsement deals with some of the most successful names in the game. Realistically, until Nike’s competitors – Adidas, Under Armour and Fanatics, to name a few – leave the industry completely, it won’t be an option for Nike to do so. Being stuck in a revolving door of “Who’s the biggest sportswear giant of them all” will do that to you.
Before signing with Nike, Jason Day was known to wear clothes and shoes from Adidas Golf, Nike’s main competitor in the golf space. But Day is now singing a completely different tune. “Joining Nike is a dream come true,” Day said. “The brand is synonymous with the world’s best athletes. I’m honored and can’t wait to be part of the team and working closely with Nike to take my game, and the sport of golf, to even higher levels.”
And of course Nike is equally thrilled to have snagged a deal with the pro golfer. “He’s an incredible player who has demonstrated tremendous work ethic and amazing resilience over the course of his career. We’re excited to help him chase more championships in the coming years.” said Daric Ashford, President of Nike Golf, in a statement.
Will being backed by the world’s top golfers be enough to set Nike apart from the competitors nipping at its heels? What do you think? Comment down below!
