ICYMI: The US Government’s New Dietary Guidelines


The results are in: sugar is bad, vegetables are good. Every five years, the country’s top food and nutrition experts come together to review the Dietary Guidelines for Americans – a document that provides insight into what consumers should be eating to maintain a healthy, balanced diet. It’s a yearly contest to see which food will outwit and outlast the fads to remain in the document. Kale? Yogurt? Coffee? It’s the definitive guide to healthful living and it’s never published without controversy within the Health and Wellness community.

The document isn’t just for consumers, though. Following the report which was published in 2015 and will be valid until the next review in 2020, the U.S. Departments of Health and Human Services (HHS) and Agriculture (USDA) also revise their standards according to the new information. These are powerful departments, ones that affect everything from grocery store prices to what children are taught is healthy in school.

Intended for policymakers and health professionals, this edition of the Dietary Guidelines outlines how people can improve their overall eating patterns” explains the website.

“The [advisory committee] has produced an honest, straightforward, courageous report thoroughly based on research and at long last without mincing words,” says a Nestle representative to the Huffington Post.

Here’s a taste of what’s in the report:

  • Three to five cups of coffee per day can be incorporated into healthy eating patterns
  • Whole fruits (the best type to eat) include fresh, canned, frozen, and dried forms
  • Consume less than 10 percent of calories per day from saturated fats
  • Aspartame in amounts commonly consumed is safe and poses minimal health risk for healthy individuals
  • According to American eating patterns, one should consume 2½ cup-equivalents of vegetables per day of a variety of vegetables
