Target Invests $20 Million, Mandates Gender-Neutral Bathrooms in Stores
Retail industry giant Target has implemented a policy that mandates all their stores to have washrooms sensitive to gender identity by the end of 2017. Target opened their bathrooms for customers to use according to which gender they identify back in April.
“We welcome transgender team members and guests to use the restroom or fitting room facility that corresponds with their gender identity,” the retailer said. “Everyone deserves to feel like they belong.”
The news garnered mixed response across the spectrum – LGBT groups nationwide supported the effort, while some religious groups and state legislation opposed the decision.

With Target steadfastly standing by their decision (and investing $20 million toward the effort), a second movement was made to also include single-stall washrooms to quell the concerns of those opposed, and to further include those who don’t identify with one specific gender.
Katie Boylan, a Target spokesperson told the Huffington Post “all but 20 of Target’s 1,800 locations will have the single-stall bathrooms by November” and the remaining will follow shortly after.
After news broke of Target leading the way in trans-inclusive restroom policy, other retail giants like Barnes & Noble and Saks have followed in their footsteps.
